CHAPTER FORTY

Alina embraced the Lotus energy, her hair flaring into brilliant life. But she couldn’t do anything that might harm Fivera. If this even was Fivera. She held up her hands and imagined a barrier between them, a fiery net to keep him from attacking her. Holding the image in her mind, trying to visualize every part of it, she made a throwing gesture with her hands and the barrier sprang from her fingertips. It stretched across the room from wall to wall, reaching up to the ceiling high overhead.

Zuro dove and swooped on Alina’s side of the barrier.

“That doesn’t look like our Fivera,” he said, peering through the fiery mesh.

“He looks older. And he’s been through some battles I would say,” Lottie said within Alina’s mind.

“Well, I’ll be. How did that happen?” Prometheus said, one hand stroking his chin. “This chap is completely out of his time. That wasn’t supposed to happen at all.”

Alina had time for one startled glance at Prometheus’ thinking aloud before Fivera reached the fiery barrier and with a grim smile, slashed at it with his sword. Alina now saw that it wasn’t the sword that he customarily carried. Not the rapier that Fivera Paladin was renowned for his skill with. This was a sword with a curved edge and a long handle. It gleamed with a white-blue glow, as though it were made of ice.

The blade cut through the mesh of Lotus energy, creating a gap through which Fivera ran. Alina gaped.

“How did he do that?” Lottie’s voice in her head sounded shocked.

“Time to leave, I think,” Zuro said as he dove for Fivera.

A blast of fire made Fivera duck and swerve off the direct line he had been making for Alina. Zuro tried to grab the sword from Fivera’s hands, stone talons impervious to the sharp metal. But Fivera dodged with the skill and dexterity of a snake. The flat of the blade struck Zuro in the side, knocking him in a tumbling ball of wings and tail.

“I won’t let you destroy my world like you did all the others. Varen stands!” Fivera roared as he raised the sword high and charged for Alina.

She backed away, throwing up barrier after barrier. But he slashed through each. She tried to hold him in place, binding him with magical ropes. But, the ice-blue sword defeated her and Fivera got closer each time. Pandora was watching with a look of concentration. Prometheus focused his many-lensed eyes on the struggle, multiple pencil beams of red light strobing about Fivera. He muttered to himself and seemed to be making notes in the air with dancing fingers.

“No way to stop him short of killing him. I say flight is the best option. Get us out of here, girl,” Lottie said.

“I can’t create a portal,” Alina replied desperately.

“You can do anything you choose to do. You know the mechanics of the spell. No time to worry about the niceties. Wherever we end up will be better than here. Now!”

“Zuro! Get over here!” Alina yelled.
